Matthew Hilton is one of Britain’s most venerated contemporary furniture designers. From an early age Hilton always gravitated towards architecture, design, and painting, and yet the notion of being a designer didn’t occur to him until it was suggested by a tutor at Portsmouth College of Art. Hilton enrolled in the renowned Furniture and Design course at England’s Kingston Polytechnic and after graduating in 1979, he went on to work as an Industrial Engineer and model maker for Capa until 1984. In 1991, Matthew Hilton designed his most iconic piece, the Balzac Armchair, produced by SCP Ltd. Matthew Hilton was appointed a Royal Designer for Industry in 2004.
